What do basketball dunkers mean by the term vertical?

I am a basketball player and I hope one day when I get older I can dunk, I keep going on YouTube and reading the comments of videos showing people dunking. So what does the term "vertical" mean?|||Vertical jump is the distance you can jump without taking any steps, ie you're jumping straight up.

To measure it, you put measuring tape vertically next to you (against a wall or solid surface), and you jump with your arm raised as high as you can, and you see (or have a friend look) how far up your hand goes when you jump vertically.|||As you probably know "vertical" means up and down. Your "vertical" is how high you can jump from the ground.

If you want to know your vertical, get a camera and a ruler (I advise a meter stick) and set the ruler straight up and record the camera.

Jump as high as you can and then stop the camera and watch it to record how high you jumped.

Hope that helps|||it means how high they jump.
