How to be a good defensive player in basketball?

i need tips on how to improve you defensing skills in basketball...sometime there are diff. types opponent that you play with, some are just plain small and clever how much more if they'r buff...any tips for a better defense advantages against any kinds of opponent u play with in basketball? basketball guh-ds speak up!|||I'm no basketball guh-d but I'll give my advice haha.

First thing is, if you're just recreationally always guard the opposing teams best player. It will only make you better. Once you've guarded the best, the rest seem easy.

For taller post players you want to always keep you hands out and moving, look to poke away post entry passes, and always ALWAYS box out on rebounds. When they are backing you down keep your forearm against their back for leverage and don't give them any ground. Keep them away from the basket as far as possible.

For bigger buffer players you want to be an energitic defender, be a pest. On average bulky players are not the best ballhandlers, make them work for everything they get.

I will tell you this, defense is about timing, instincts and the ability to know players tendencies. Defense is about effort and experience too.|||It don't matter how big they are, how small they are, or how good they are, how bad they are. If you go One on One with them, keep your eyes following his hips, and keep your own hips aligned with his, if you can. If you're down low getting posted up, keep one hand on the opponent's back and one on the opponent's elbow. The reason for the elbow, is that the oppenent can elbow you and knock you over to get an easy layup, and it would not be a foul. Keep that in mind. Also, Defense is more of a game of toughness and mentally you have to keep focus. Don't focus on his feet or the ball that is constantly going between his legs, while the offensive player is trying to juke you out. Focus on his hips. Stay close, but if he has the ball, make some room. If you are 2 inches away and the oppenent has the ball, he can just drive right past you. On the other hand, there is off ball defense. Man to Man is a great off ball defense. Keep your hands on the opponent at all times. Don't worry if they push you around, telling you to get off of them. It isn't a foul, it's clean. No matter what, give them no room at all.

Hope I helped you with your Defense, good luck.|||Im a pretty good defender myself. This year my defensive stats were terrific. 4 spg and 2bpg (i can jump really high!!) Always be aware of where the ball is and where your man is dont let your man slip by u. this is the most important part of defense. stay between the your man and the ball and if your man has the ball dont look at him or the ball. look at his waist. he cant go anywhere without his waist

Hope i help!!!!!!!!!!|||always keep balance and don't lean too much on one side or you'll get crossovered Keep your hands near the ball!! whenever the ball moves when you're defending an opponent keep your hands close to the ball making him have to pass it, have a tough shot, or call for a pick.|||i dont know but im a point guard and hate having a different size match up everytime like sometimes i get really short guys to defend or sometimes big buff *** guys nd it pisses me off cuz i always have to defend differantly|||watch there chest

get quick feet

good timing

balance

somehow try to disrupt the shot
